More ideas on how independent ecommerce businesses can compete with Amazon.

Not only does Amazon control nearly 50% of e-commerce sales, the company has clearly set its sights on physical retail as well, having acquired Whole Foods and opened multiple retail stores last year. And emerging consumer brands should be even more concerned now that Amazon is making a concerted push into private-label.

  • Create an aspirational brand

  • Build a community

  • Go niche over mass

  • Deploy an omnichannel strategy

  • Commit to values

I’m not sure numbers 1 and 5 are all that different. #4 is hard to understand. The author makes the case that because Amazon is foremost an ecommerce company that others may have an advantage here, while acknowledging that traditional brick-and-more retail is hurting.
